Maybe I'm being dense or am just uninformed but I've never seen this on the engines of previous cars I've owned (or other cars we have now). Is this somehow plumbed into the PCV system even though it's not directly going to the PCV valve as far as I can tell? (The PCV valve is on the block next to cyl 1, to the right of the gray plug in the top right of the top picture). Where's the air going, though? The top hole is right below the cylinder number 2 intake runner. It looks like maybe oily vapor comes in through the hole in the bottom and gets sucked by engine vacuum through the hole in the top, hopefully leaving the oil droplets in the compartment and allowing only the air through. Presumably the actual air/oil separator is the compartment cast into the block with the "maze" of aluminum walls inside. The best illustration of this I can find is in a TSB I have a copy of (forgive the arrows, the TSB is only tangentially related to this part but it's the best picture I have): The current Civic's 1.8l engine has an "air/oil separator" on the back of its block. well, clearly it's meant to separate air from oil but my question is really more where is that air going?

Overall, we were very pleased with the quality of the IAG Performance Street Series AOS and would highly recommend this product to anyone looking to protect their engine from harmful oil ingestion. The bottom half is filled with a metal 'chore boy' scrub pad to coalesce the oil, and the breather from the engine goes into that area. Basically its a vertical tube, about 2' diameter and 6' or so long. While the Competition Series AOS eliminates the chances of any oil to be drawn back into the intake tract, the Street Series does an excellent job of doing so as well. I made an air/oil separator for my plane based on the Tony Bingelis design. With the Street Series AOS, these vapors are routed back to the intake tract and reburned by the engine. These vapors can dilute the oil and cause a lack of lubrication. When utilizing ethanol fuels the oiling system can become contaminated by the additional fuel, as well as the vapors from the unburnt ethanol. It also retains a PCV valve to draw additional suction on the PCV system to further help separate the air from the oil. The Street Series Air Oil Separator recirculates the PCV gases back into the turbo inlet in the same way the factory PCV system does. This AOS is also suitable for vehicles making less than 600 WHP which you do not want to retune for the addition of the AOS. Fire in reciprocating expander oil separator at. We chose this unit since we plan to run the IAG PTFE Flex Fuel Line Kit on our 2012 STI. with oxygen, or exposed to oxygen rich air as a result of leaks. IAG recommends the Street Series AOS for anyone using ethanol fuels on their vehicle.
